"The Lottery" and " The Perils of Indiference" both demonstrate and disscuss that terrible violence and inhumanity can be demonstrated by the most "ordinary" citizens.

In "The Lottery" the people of a humble village choose at random a person to stone. They choose by making everyone choose a piece of paper from an old black box and the person that draws the one with the black spot has to draw again along with the rest of their family. After the second drawing the one family member with the spot gets stoned . When Mr.Hutchinsen draws the black spot his wife Tessie exclaims "You didn't give him enough time to take the paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn't fair.". Ignoring her pleas the villagers force the Hutchinsens to all Draw for the second time. "It's Tessie" Mr. Summers Said and his voice was hushed "Show us her paper Bill", the villagers gathered quickly in a circle around her and started to select stones from a pile " and someone gave little Davy Hutchinson a few pebbles". As the Villagers approached Mrs. "Hutchinson screamed "It isn't fair, it isn't right." and then they were upon her.

In the speech "The Perils of Indifference" Elie Wiesel talks about how the world is very indifferent. Wiesel has endured the Holocaust himself and describes how not only The Nazi's that discriminated on the Jewish people, but when everyone else was turning a blind eye the were just as discriminant. This act of in difference is what causes world problems to escalate. As in "the Lottery" no one seems to be interested in changing this so the indifference that we have still remains .
